John is listed as being killed in action on 27 April 1918. The 59th Brigade, RGA war diary entries for the 25th, 26th along with the 25th Brigade entries for 26th and 27th are transcribed below as 30th Siege Battery moved from 59th to the 25th Brigade on 26th April. 59th Brigade - Field - 1918 April 25: Heavy shelling of battery positions on the Canal Bank. 350 SB [Siege Battery) has one gun knocked out during the evening. Enemy attacked on our right and captured Kemmel Hill. 59th Brigade - Field - 1918 April 26: 30 SB ordered to pull out & proceed at once to Esquelbecq under administration of 25th Brigade RGA 37, 335 & 350 SB ordered to pull out one section and get into the action on the Red Line Position. 350 SB subsequently pulled out remaining section. 335 SB were badly shelled on Canal Bank during the move, 1 man being killed and 4 wounded. 25th Brigade - Esquelbecq - 26:4:1918: (see above) 11 R.M.A and 375 Siege Battery move from Wormhordt to Schipstadt near Millain (Nord) to clear the former town. 25th Brigade - Esquelbecq - 27:4:1918: (see above) 12 R.M.A. leave for IX Corps H.A. (Abeele District). 21, 30, 90, 152, 191 & 286 Siege Batteries return (consequent upon the taking of Kemmel ?) parking this time along the Zeggers - Cappel - Bissezeele Road. |
