Service and Enlistment
Although Arthur was with the 8th Battalion when he was wounded they did not arrive in France until 28 Sep 1917 some 9 months after Arthur who arrived in
15 Jan 1915. We have established that Arthur was previously with the 2nd Battalion Royal Lancaster's and from his service number, 9150, we can state that
he enlisted after 1 Jan 1907 when number 9134 was issued and prior to 20 Aug 1908 when number 9800 was issued.
The 2nd Battalion war diary tells us that they orginally arrived in France on 15 Jan 1915 at Le Havre.
Arthur had previously received gun shot wounds in 1916 and recovered to rejoin his unit.
Circumstances of Death
Arthur died of wounds on 22 Feb 1917 at the No 37 Casualty Clearing Station at Avesnes-le-Comte. The war diary does not list any casualties in the whole month of February 1917 and in the days and weeks leading up to his death every available man in the battalion was engaged in working parties near Arras.
