Pre War Military Service

Unfortunately Jame's service record did not survive the WW2 fire and so we cannot say when he enlisted other than that we know his service record was issued at some stage between 19th June 1911 and the 12th January 1912.

At outbreak of the war the 1st Battalion were stationed in Agra India and were mobilised and on 6 Sep 1914 arrived in Bombay and 8 Sep 1914 in Karachi from where they set sail aboard HT Devanha, they passed Aden on 27 Sep 1918 andf thence through the Suez Canal on 3 Oct 1914 and arrived in Marsailles on 12 Oct via Port Said and passing Malta and Sardinia.

Circumstances of Death

James is listed as being killed in action on 10 Mar 1915 during the Battle of Neuve Chapelle. The battalion war diary entry for 10 Mar 1915 is transcribed below.
