Circumstances of Death

Ernest is listed as being killed in action on 9 Aug 1918. The 15th Battalion war diary entry for that day is transcribed below.

Halfaut - August 8th: Battalion left Halfaut by bus and returned to Remy, after tea marched to Westootre line where Coys took up their usual positions

Westootre - August 9th: Attack was carried out as laid down. Forming up was done without casualties. On right and centre the general line of objectives was gained all along the line. On the left of D Company resistance was heavier that anticipated and the last two had to be made short of the objective line, C and B Coys had heavy fighting and about 50% casualties. A Coy encountered much less opposition. About 30 prisoners and a number of valuable documents captured mostly by C Coy.

Westootre - August 10th: Line consolidated and handed over to 18th K.R.R.C. Battalion marched back to Billets in Lappe area.
