John is listed as dying of wounds on 16th September 1918. The war diary and a newspaper report reveals that he was wounded on 15th Sept 1915 during the attack on Maissemy Ridge. The Battalion war diary entry and the newspaper report are transcribed below. War DiaryVilleveque & Marteville - Sept 15th 1918: At 5.30am A,B and C Companies attacked made under an artillery barrage with a view to gaining the high ground in R 30 and R 36. All objectives were gained, many of the enemy were killed and 9 prisoners and 10 machine guns captured. Throughout the day enemy snipers were very active and caused many casualties. Casualties for the day. Wounded Lieut E. Richardson C Coy; 2/Lt W.H. Lamberrt A Coy; Lieut G.E. Birkett MC RAMC all wounded. 13 other ranks killed and 47 wounded. The Corps Commander Lieut Gen Sir W. Braithewaite KCB Comdg IX Corps wired congratulations on capture of some very important ground. The Battalion was relieved by Loyal North Lancs, 1st Inf Bde and moved into Brigade Reserve near Vermand. Newspaper ReportThe Stratford-upon-Avon Herald - Friday October 4th 1918 Private John Gibbs, of the 1st Gloucesters, aged 27, was the elder son of Mrs John Gibbs, whose husband, a much-respected inhabitant of Upper Quinton, only died last October after a long illness. Private Gibbs who wounded in action on September 15th and died in hospital the following day without gaining consciousness, was greatly valued in the army, officers and men alike testifying to the fact that he was brave and capable soldier and a good comrade, distinguished by straightness, high principle, and conscientious discharge of duty. |
