Circumstances of Death
William, who was 3 years underage when he enlisted aged 15 and was then killed aged 17, is listed as being killed in action on 16 Nov 1916. The war diary for that day is transcribed in full. For context we have also transcribed the previous (15th) and subsequent (17th) days. Minden Trench 15 XI 16 - 8.30am: Orders received for the 99th Bde that Munich trench would be attacked at 9am. The attack to be carried out by the 8th East Lancs and 10th L.N. Lancs supported by 11 R. War. R. Munich trench was found to be very strongly held, the attack was held up. Under cover of dark the Battn reorganised in Leave Trench and Wagon Road with Batt HQ in Beucourt Trench. Capt J.S. Thain MC. Adjutant wounded. Wagon Road/Leave Trench 16 XI 16: The Batt held on in Wagon Road. During the afternoon a heavy hostile barrage was experienced Wagon Road 17 XI 16: The Batt was relieved & moved into billets in Maille-Maillet. At 2pm Batt marched into billets at Englebelmer. END William was killed on the same day, in the same action, as fellow 11th Battalion Alveston soldier William Henry Insell |
