William is listed as being killed in action on 26 July 1916 The battalion war diary entry is transcribed below. The Canadian virtual war memorial states that William was killed by a bullet through the head while on sentry duty in the trenches.

July 26, 1916 Trenches - The Bluff - Ypres
Pte. Salt, C Coy, killed. Buried at Railway Dugouts Cemetery at night. Lt Jones and 11 O.R. went to Engineers as special wiring party. 2 O.R. sent to 3rd Tunnelling Coy for special work. Quiet day. Weather fine. END
