Circumstances Leading to Death (Normally from War Diary)
Heber is listed as being killed in action on 27th June 1917.The 14th Battalion war diary entries for the 27th & 28th are transcribed below are self explanatory. Trenches – Oppy – 27.6.1917: 13th Brigade relieved by 15th Brigade & 95th Brigade. The battalion is relieved by 1/Bedford Regt & 12/Gloucester Regt & on relief withdraws to Bow Huts. The Brigade being Divisional Reserve. Pte’s G. Clements; H. Climer and F. Goldsmith all killed by shell fire. Ecurie – 28.6.1917: The 15th Brigade attack enemys front line trench from junction of Oppy Trench with Cardorna Trench, took the left, the junction of Fresnoy Trench with Arleaux Support. The 31st Division attacking Cardorna Trench on the right. The whole attack was quite successful all objectives being gained together with some 200 prisoners & a few machine guns. |
