Circumstances of Death

Thomas is listed as dying of wounds on 19th June 1916 at a military hospital or Casualty Clearing Station based in Bethune. The 11th (Pioneer) Battalion reveals that he was wounded on the 17th June near Loos by an Ariel Torpedo. The war diary entries for the period 10th to 12th June are transcribed below.

Loos – 16 Jun 1916: Fine. Following casualties in D Coy in the Boyaus, 14836 Pnr Clarke killed, Pnr 19678 Boatswain, 27451 Cole, 15204 Crockford, 19642 House wounded by rifle grenades. Rather more shelling of Loos.

Loos – 17 Jun 1916: Fine, Wind N – NE. Gas alert on. Following casualties occurred in D Coy when fire stepping in the front line near Harrisons Coaks?. All were caused by an Ariel Torpedo. No 15210 L/Cpl Locke, Pnr 14533 Brown killed; Pioneer’s 10762 Golding; 18945 Newman; 12463 Allen; 12212 T Marshall; 12153 Scull; 15433 White and 18231 Orman all wounded.

Loos – 17 Jun 1916: Fine, west wind. Nothing of interest to report. Work by reserve Brigade these three days with Loos WALLERS
