Archer is listed as being killed in action on 3 Sep 1917 during the Third Battle of Ypres. The war diary for that day is transcribed below.

Capricorn Keep - Map Ref [28].C.18.d.6.6 - 1917 Sept 3: 7am Artillery put down smoke barrage and front line Coys lit smoke candles. Enemy at once put down heavy artillery barrage on Capricorn Keep & Trench.

10pm Heavy enemy barrage of same points during attack by 6 R War R on Hill 35. Barrage lasted 1 1/2 hours. Very heavy artillery fire on both sides throughout the night.

Casualties 4 O.R killed 4 wounded.
