Charles is listed as dying of his wounds on 28 May 1917. His service record states that he died at ? Field Ambulance. The war diary for the day is transcribed below.

Poperinghe - In the Field 28/5/1917 - 10.40am: No 1 Gun hit by hostile shell - Knocked out of action. Casualties 4 OR's killed & 3 OR's wounded. Cpl Gibbons, Gnr Gillooley, Gnr Carliss, Gnr Jones C.E killed. Bd Whitely Cp[l Smith F.H; Gnr Tilley T wounded.

Gnr Jones CE died result of wounds and burns at the Field Ambulance Hospital.
