Circumstances of Death

Reginald is listed as being killed in action on 29th August 1918. The 4th Battalion war diary entries for the period 28th to 30th August are transcribed below.

Front Line near Greenland Hill - 28 Aug 1918: Showery & dull. Battn takes over front line from 6th Gordon’s starting 8.15pm. A & D Coys front line with C & B Coys in support. Move completes 1am 29th inst.

Operation orders received for attack next morning. A Coy on right & D Coy on left.

Casualties slight.

Company commanders were: A - 2/Lt Philip MC; B - Lt A Rule?; C - Capt Burney? MC;
D - Lt N.S. Williamson.

Greenland Hill - 29 Aug 1918: Battn attacks on an nine hundred yards front to a depth of 1000x [yards]. Zero hour 6.30am. Barrage lifts hundred yards every five minutes. A & D Coys capture first objective by 7am with little casualties.

B & C Coys capture last objective, Greenland Hill by 8am, scheduled time, casualties slight. Enemy resistance was feeble with little shelling.

During afternoon hostile shelling very heavy but all companies hold on. Prisoners taken by Bn 90. At night C Coy relieved by A Coy.

Casualties were: killed 1 Officer (2/Lt A Murray) & 11 OR’s; Wounded 3 Officers & 70 OR’s; missing 13 OR’s. Gassed & sick 11 OR. (This covers the night of 29/30th inst.

Greenland Hill – 30 Aug 1918: Weather dull but dry. Front line organised and patrols pushed forward from A & B Coys to establish outpost line which was occupied by A & B Coys at night.

Fairly heavy shelling by 5.9’s & 4.2’s during the day.
