Circumstances Leading to Death (Normally from War Diary)
The day that Charles was killed, 31 July 1917, was the first day of the Third Battle of Ypres (Passchendaele) and the initial Anglo-French attack (the Battle of Pilckem Ridge) was hampered by heavy rain and failed to breakthrough, but the Allies captured a substantial amount of ground from which they hoped to renew their assault.
As part of the Battle of Pilckhem Ridge the battalion was in the lines east of Wijtschate near June Farm and July Farm and received orders to advance and capture the very close by Bab Farm, Bee Farm, Rifle Farm and later May Farm. The operation was more or less successful but came at a cost of 212 casualties. The battalion positions were later reinforced by the East Lancashire Regiment. The map below shows just how close the allied and German front lines were to each other. Blue pins Allied and Red pins the objectives.
