Jim is listed as being killed in action on Tuesday 8th August 1916. The 2nd/5th Battalion war diary entries are transcribed below.

Moated Grange - 7 Aug 1916: Quiet day in trenches

Moated Grange - 8 Aug 1916: Enemy sprang a mine under our parapet at M.30.c.1½.4 & attacked with a small body of infantry. This was repulsed & identifications obtained from German dead.

Moated Grange - 9 Aug 1916: Battalion relieved by 2/8 Warwicks and proceeded to billets in Riez Bailleul. Relief completed at 5pm.
