Circumstances Leading to Death (Normally from War Diary)           

The War Diary for the period 19th to 21st June 1917 is very brief and is transcribed below: Ouderdom - 19/6/1917 to 21/6/1917: Work of consolidation was carried on steadily but under considerable difficulties. Casualties for 8 day were 1 Officer wounded. Other ranks 19 killed (including Joseph) and 51 wounded. END
 
The Leamington Gazette reported Joseph's death on 14 Jul 1917 and said that he had been wounded twice and gassed once and had gone back to the front for a third time.
