Circumstances Leading to Death (Normally from War Diary)

Mark is listed as having died on 15 Jul 1916 from the effects of being gassed on 14 Jul 1916 at the 38th Casualty Clearing Station. The Battalion war diary entry for the 14th confirms 47 casualties from a gas shell and is transcribed below.

14th: The battalion arrived at Becourt Wood. At 11am news arrived that Bazentin had fallen into our hands and that the German lines had been broken on a front of 6000 yards. There was also an announcement that Cavalry had passed through the gap. It was remarkable what an effect this had on the spirit on the men. During the afternoon the Germans commenced putting a noxcious form of gas shell into Becourt Wood. The fumes of this shell were different from the normal ? shell and made men sick. 47 casualties in all were received from these shells and 30 other ranks were wounded, 10 subsequently died from the effects (including Mark). There was much rain that morning. END
