On the day William was killed, 14 Mar 1915, the battalion were in the front lines on the eastern side of Neuve Chappelle when they were subjected to a severe barrage that lasted all day. By the end of it the 50 men were dead, 231 wounded and 34 missing and presumed dead or wounded. William was likely one of the missing as his body was never recovered.
