  • Please note that we found two men named Charles Spires aged around 34 in 1917 (per age on CWGC)
  • The CWGC website gives his name as G. Spires
  • Charles's Pension Card shows his wife to have been Mary Ann and we have found the marriage cert and 1911 census to support this.
  • We think that Charles is the man in the birth certificate (see below) and not the man named in the 1901 census with his mother Amanda
  • This is supported by his baptism at Leamington Spa St. Mary's on whose war memorial his name appears.
  • A newspaper report (see below) about his death fails to name any relatives by name.
  • We think that Charles was at Weston Reformatory (Training School) in 1901 as he does not appear on any census records with his parents or siblings.
  • The name C. Spires appears on the Weston Training School WW1 Memorial
  • In 1907 Charles was convicted of violent drunkeness
