Circumstances Leading to Death (Normally from War Diary)
|
George is listed as being killed in action on 7 May 1917. The war diary and circumstance of casualty card indicate that George was one of five men killed in a heavy and continous artillery bombardment on their trenches near Mont Foret Quarris west of Acheville. The war diary for the day is transcribed below. Reference Map : Willerval - 7th: During the day enemy heavily shelled our front and support lines, 5 O.R's being killed and 13 wounded. During the night the enemy maintained a continuous bombardment of gas-shells on the Railway Line so that our ration parties were unable to get through until early morning and owing to daylight coming on the rations could not be taken past the reserve line.
