Alfred was a Regimental Bandsman, Stretcher Bearer and Servant to Captain Napier. The following extract from the book The Warwickshire Yeomanry in the Great War by The Hon. H.A. Adderley (Click here to read on Internet Archive) shows that Alfred was struck in the head whilst inside a dug-out. On the night of the 22nd, the Brigade returned to Chocolate Hill and dug in on the side of Hill 70. The Regiment remained for a time in the reserve line on the side of Chocolate Hill, honeycombed with dug-outs, and occupied a position somewhat exposed to enfilade fire, suffering also from the near proximity of a battery of their own artillery which drew the enemy’s fire. On the 26th several casualties occurred in the Division, the Turks having got a gun into position on the left flank, from which they were able to enfilade the whole of the dug-outs. Capt Teichman (Worcester Yeo.) who was acting as Brigade Doctor was wounded, and Capt. ‘Torrance was appointed in his place. On the following day Pte. Albright, who was Capt. Napier’s servant, was hit in the head while in his dug-out, and died a few hours after. Pte Greely, “B’’ Squadron, was badly wounded on September 3rd. |
