Circumstances of Death

Herbert is listed as being killed in action on 22 Oct 1916. The 1st/6th Battalion war diary reveals that the Battalion were in the lines at The Bluff nr St. Eloi in preparation for an attack on enemy lines when at 6am two, or possibly three, German mines/tunnels were exploded under the British lines causing trenches to collapse and many men to be buried, the Germans attacked but the attacks were repelled and no ground was lost.
