  • 5 Mar 1902 - Commissioned as 2nd Lt in Royal North Devon Hussars
  • 1906 - Left the Hussars and began farming
  • Aug 1914 - Appointed as a Remount purchasing officer (Sourcing Horses for the Army)
  • 5 Oct 1914 - Joined Devonshire Regiment and promoted to Temp Capt [Gazette]
  • Sept 1915 - Badly wounded in Battle of Loos and invalided home
  • 16 Feb 1918 - Returned to Active Service [Gazette]
  • 7 May 1918 - Arrived back in France at Marsailles aboard the Leasowe Castle and boarded train to Noyelles
  • 2 Sep 1918 - Wounded at Moislains

Circumstances of Death

Joseph is listed as dying of wounds on 4th September 1918 at the 20th Casualty Clearing Station which was the only hospital using Heilly Station cemetery at that time. The 16th Battalion war diary for the 2nd Septemer is transcribed below and is self-explanatory.

In the Field - 2/9/18: 5.30am Zero Hour, attack on village of Moislains. Strong resistence met with by A & B Companies - casualties heavy. Capt Muntz, 2/Lt Moody, 2/Lt Jones, 2/Lt Garcia. Wounded. Posts held by A Company in Moislains trench. 2/Lt Moriaty gassed.

D Coy relieved A & B Coys. Bn HQ's situated C 22 central. Liason established on left with London Regt. Gas shelling at intervals during day. Heavy shelling during night 2nd/3rd. C Coy in support. 14 R M on right.
