Military Service

  • January 1908 - 1st/1st Warwickshire Battery was formed as a Territorial Unit and based at Warwick Castle where recruitment began before moving to Leamington in 1911
  • Btwn Jan 1908 and 22nd May 1908 Leonard enlisted as Gunner 37
  • 5 Aug 1914 - Mobilised at Leamington Spa
  • 31 Oct 1914 - Arrived in France as Gunner 37 with 1st/1st Warwick Battery, RHA
  • 24 Apr 1917 - Commissioned as 2nd Lt following training as an Officer Cadet

Circumstances of Death

Leonard is listed as dying from his wounds on 1 Nov 1917 and he was buried at Dozinghem Military Cemetery. The 82nd Brigade war diary names Leonard in a list of officer changes (page 61) as being wounded on 31 Oct 1917. After being wounded he would have been taken to 1 of 3 Casualty Clearing Station's that used Dozinghem for its burials, the 4th, 47th or 61st. The 82nd Brigade war diary entries for the 30 & 31 Oct 1917 are transcribed, in full, below.

NE of Ypres - 30-10-17: The 58th Division resumed the offensive today & the enclosed O.O. 51 [Operational Order 51] with barrage map shows tasks, rates of fire etc allotted to the Artillery supporting the attack. The 82nd Brigade with Am3/298 and D/282 covered the line allotted to C Group. This attack was more successful than the last, the Right Division making an appreciable advance.

NE of Ypres - 30-10-17 & 31-10-17: The Brigade suffered severe losses from enemy shell fire and Gas shelling both of these days, D & B / 82 batteries losing all officers and good ? of other ranks.
