Circumstances of Death

George died of exposure during a snow storm and subsequent flooding of the trenches. The 4th Battalion war diary entries for overnight on the 27th/28th Nov are transcribed below. Suvla Bay Gallipoli – Nov 27th 1915: Rain turned into snow followed by hard frost thus causing many casualties due to exposure. 2/Lt Freemnoy killed, Capt Simmonds. Lt Bayley RAMC, RSM Felix sick from exposure. The men suffered mostly from frozen feet. The trenches were in a very bad condition, in places were completely washed away. Several were drowned and several died from exposure [including George]. Suvla Bay Gallipoli – Nov 28th 1915: Very busy repairing damaged done by storm. Still freezing hard, fires were allowed to be used in the firing line. A few casualties due to frost bite. Capt Saw RAMC joined. |
