Circumstances of Death

Sidney is listed as having died of wounds on 24 Jun 1915. He died at the 11th Casualty Clearing Station near Seddulbahir. His Royal Naval Division Casualty records states that:

"On the evening of June 23, 1915, he [Sydney] was wounded by Turkish shellfire in the Kereves Dere, Helles, while returning from work along a mule track (Sapper Mason and Lance Corporal Nunn were killed, Sergeant Goodwin was wounded)".

A newspaper report about Sydney's death which appeared in the Warwick Advertiser on 7 Jul 1915 is transcribed below.

"News was received yesterday (Friday) by Mr. J.E. Ledbrook, of Swan Street, Warwick, that his second son, Sapper Sydney W. Ledbrook, died on June 24th from wounds received in action near the Dardenelles. Sapper Ledbrook, who took part in the first landing there, was serving in the Divisional Engineers, R.N. Division. He enlisted towards the end of last year, giving up the appointment of engineer at Bryncethin Mine, South Wales, in order to render service to the country.

He was educated at the King's Middle School [Warwick School] where he gained a County Major Scholarship. He entered Birmingham University and took a first class in the Engineering course, with the degree of B.Sc. One well able to judge says that Mr. Ledbrook combined a brilliant mind with great perserverance, and that had he gone to Cambridge University he might have taken a first in the National Science Tripos.

Much sympathy is felt with the parents and their family".
