Circumstances of Death

John is listed as dying of wounds on 19 Aug 1917. The 14th Battalion war entries for the period 17th to 19th are transcribed below but in precis John was wounded by a German bullet that had been aimed at an aircraft over the lines at Willerval on 17 Aug 1917. He was the only casualty that day and he died of those wounds 2 days later at the 19 Casualty Clearing Station, Agnez-les-Duisans.

Farbus - 18/8/1917: The battalion is relieved by the 2/K.O.S.B's & takes over Brown Line (Reserve) from 15/R.War's. ENDS

Farbus - 19/8/1917: 2Lt J.B. Smith wounded on 18-8-17 [17-8-17], died of wounds.
