William is listed as being killed in action on 27th July 1916. The 17th Battalion war diary entries for the 26th, 27th & 28th are transcribed below. Bois des Tailles - July 26th: Resting. Delville Wood nr Longueval - July 27th: We had sudden orders to move up to the front line at 11am to reinforce the 99th Brigade who had pushed the enemy out of Delville Wood and required assistance. We moved off via Montauban, Bernafray Wood - Trones Wood to Delville. A fierce artillery bombardment was going on most of our way up. We reinforced the 1st KRR on the right of the Wood. Enemy gave us a ? time. Delville Wood nr Longueval - July 28th: At 12pm the enemy counter attacked but we beat him off with great loss to him & held our line and consolidated. END |
