Original Burial

George's service records indicate that he was originally buried at Map Reference 57c.E.13.c.7.8 - 7.75 miles west of Cambrai.

Circumstances Leading to Death (Normally from War Diary)

George was originally listed as missing in action on 29 Sep 1918 and on it was accepted on 8 Nov 1918 that he had been killed on 29 Sep 1918. The war diary for the day is transcribed below.

In action over the Canal du Nord - 27/9/18: Zero hour at 5.20am. The 52nd Division advance to high ground east of Canal du Nord. 190th brigade advance and mop up the hindon le perg line followed by 188th Brigade 189th brigade in support. The 1st Bn Royal Marines move zero + 20 minutes. Anson Bn on left with Royal Irish Regiment in support. Reaching E.16d and E.21.B the battalion swing southeast and move to the attack on the village of Anneux. Strong opposition was met with at the factory between Anneux and Graincourt but was overcome with heavy loss to the enemy in personnel and material. The village of Anneux was captured at 2:30 pm and the line consolidated.

 

At 6:45 pm the enemy counter attacked under a heavy machine gun barrage but was repulsed with heavy loss. The enemy left many killed, the remainder of the night passed off quietly.

Casualties: Killed Officers 4 other ranks 28. Wounded Officers 6 other ranks 91. Captures 2 heavy howitzers and 9 field guns. END
