Circumstances Leading to Death (Normally from War Diary)           

George is listed as being killed on 14 Aug 1917 during the Battle of Langemarck. The Battalion war diary for that day is transcribed below:
 
Aug 15 1917: Bn moved to Reigersborg Camp at 1.15pm
 
Aug 16 1917: The Bn went forward as the leading Bn of the Div reserve is support to the left of the 145 Bde in attack on Langemarck Line. Bn HQ moved at 4.15am to Kultur Farm. D Coy moved at 4.15am to Regina Cross and Alberta Trench 100 yards W of Steen Beek. C, B & A Coys moved to O.G.1, O.G.2 and O.B.1.
 
At 11am orders were received to move the Bn forward over the Steenbeek to fill a gap in the line said to exist between the left of our Div and the right of the 11th Div. D Coy were ordered to cross the Steenbeek, C Coy to move to D Coys old position. B Company to Alberta, A Coy 200 yds W of Kitcheners Wood. BN HQ moved to C.11.a.6.7.
 
At 5.30pm orders were received to capture Mon Du Hibou and Triangle Farm. C Coy were detailed with Zero at 7.30pm. Attack was launched and the men were going well when checked by M.G and snipers and could make no further progress. Capt AB Montgomery and 2nd Lieut Hazlewood were wounded. 7 O.R killed, 37 O.R wounded and 12 O.R missing.
 
At 10.30pm orders were received to launch another attack on Mon Du Hibou with Zero at 2.30am [on the] 17th. B Coy were detailed to make the attack. Intense shelling all day. END
