Circumstances Leading to Death (Normally from War Diary)
GASSED IN A DUG-OUT - Evening Dispatch - 23rd August 1917
"Lance Corporal F. H. Mason, son of Mr. and Mrs. Mason, of Coughton, near Alcester, has died from the effects of gas poisoning. Along with three sergeants and a corporal, he was in a dug-out when a gas shell penetrated the wall, with fatal results to all the occupants.
A few weeks ago Lance Corporal Mason was awarded the Military Medal, but unfortunately he did not live to receive it. The information that he had been honoured reached him on the anniversary of his 21st birthday.
Lance Corporal had been a popular member of the Coughton Cricket Club, and prior to the war he worked in his father's business at Coughton Carriage Works".
From this article the war diary clearly shows that this happened overnight on the 22nd/23rd July 1917. We also know that 2nd, 53rd and 1st Australian Casualty Clearing Stations were based at Outtersteene in July & August 1917 so in summary Frederick was wounded by the effects of a gas shell exploding and being gassed and died 17 days later at a Casualty Clearing Station near Outtersteene.| Personal & Family History |
