Arthur is listed as being killed in action of 27 Sep 1918. The 14th Battalion war diary entry for that day is transcribed below. War Diary EntryYour text... Metz - Night of 26/27 Sept 1918: Battn moved up into positions N of Dead Mans Corner (see attached map marked G) [See next tab] Metz - 27 Sept 1918: This operation is in conjuction with large operations to the North. Attack is made by 1 R West Kent on right, 15 R War R on left, 14th R War R passing through 15 RWR to second objective. 2 K.O.S.B's in support (see attached report marked H). [Click here to read it] Zero hour 7.52am Battn gained objective but was bombed out of the greater part by enemy & lost many men owing to Bn on right, 15 RWR not gaining their objective. Casualties were heavy. 3 Coy Commanders of the attacking Coys, Capt Hughes A Coy, Lieut Jones C Coy & Capt Izon D Coy being killed. Lieut Sheard, 2/Lt's Blaydon, Lazenby & Cripps wounded. About 190 casualties to OR. B Coy (2/Lt Richardson) in support did good works in driving back enemy bombers. END |
