Circumstances of Death

George is listed as being killed in action on 1 Nov 1918. The brief 2nd/7th Battalion war diary entry for the events of that day are transcribed below.

Sommaing - 1st November 1918: Battalion proceeded to the sunken road (K.29.a&b) by march route; strength 42 Officers & 754 Other Ranks. Dispostions: Z Coy left front; Y Coy right front; W Coy in support & X Coy in reserve. 4th Div (1st R.B.) on left, 2/8 Worcs on right.

At 05.15 Bn advanced to attack St. Hubert (L.20.b) and high ground N of Maresches from L.14.c.8.2 to L.26.b.3.9. FOR FURTHER DETAILS SEE NARRATIVE ANNEXED.

During the attack four 77mm guns were captured and about 500 prisoners but the guns were recaptured by enemy during counter attack. 3 Officers wounded and 1 Officer missing. END
