Rupert died of Nephritis (inflammation of the kidneys) at Limburg Prisoner of War Camp. He had been captured on 11 April 1918 at Merville.

One of his Red Cross records roughly translates from German into English as "Died July 12, 1918 in the war camp in Tournai as a result of kidney inflammation" Click here for Ruperts Red Cross Records.

Details of the events leading up to Rupert's capture are taken from the Battalion war diary as follows:

On 3rd April 1918 the battalion were sent to by lorry to Saisseval.

On 4th April 1918 they took up defensive positions in the front lines at or near Pacaut where they remained until the 12th April

On 12th April patrols were sent out by they never returned and it is believed that Rupert was a member of one of those patrols.

A two page report covering the period 4th to 12th April 1918 which is taken from the battalion War Diary (© National Archives) can be read by clicking here.
