Circumstances Leading to Death (Normally from War Diary)           

Bernard is listed as being killed in action on 24 Oct 1917. The war diary for 330th Brigade shows that they were situated at Millcot which is just E to NE of Potijze. The war diary is transcribed below and we have concluded that he was killed by enemy counter battery fire.
 
'12 Guns were moved forward into action in D.21.C and D.27.W. 3 guns were put out of action by shell fire. D/330 was very heavily shelled with ariel observation from 12.30pm to 3.30pm and all guns were put out of action except one. Toll of personnel was very heavy. There was some rain in the morning, in evening barometer? fell rapidly and bad weather set in. We fired our barrages laid down in App XXIV, enemy active in reply. Casualties 3 killed and 7 wounded'
