Circumstances of Death

Thomas is listed as dying on 16th March 1918. His death certificate states that he died of Valvular Heart Disease in Basra (exact location not given).

The 9th Battalion war diary entries for the period 15th to 17th March 1918 are transcribed below.

In the field – Mesopotamia - 15 Mar 1918: Owing to an outbreak of Typhus on L. of C. arrangements have been made for the segregation of all men joining this unit.

The following Officers have joined the Battalion –
Captain H.J.M. Bushill & takes command of ‘A’ Coy.
Sec. Lieut G. Chance posted to ‘B’ Coy.
Sec. Lieut“ F.P. Feast posted to ‘D’ Coy.

No change in situation. Lt. Longrigg returned from leave in Baghdad.

Strength: Increase B.O.Rs. 1 from Command
Decrease B.O.R 1 to F.A.

In the field – Mesopotamia -16 Mar 1918: Situation unchanged

No change in situation. Lt. Longrigg is attached Brigade HQ for instructional purposes from 15/3/18.
