Following the death of his mother, Mary Ellen, in 1909 George was placed in the care of Middlemore Childrens Homes and on 6 Jul 1910 he was sent to Canada aboard SS Mongolia and he then lived in the care of Middlemore Childrens Homes there (see link on 1910 above).

In 1910 his age is recorded as being 11 yrs of age, however when he enlisted in Valcartier, Canada 4 years later he stated he was 27yrs old born 18 Oct 1887 when in fact we know from his UK baptism & birth records he was born in 1898 and therefore only 15 years and 11 months old and he was killed at age 16.

The Leamington Courier reported that George visited his father in Leamington twice between the time he arrived in England with his Battalion and his posting to France, including, what must have been, Christmas 1914.
