Circumstances of Death

Bertie is listed as accidentally drowning while bathing in one of the many canals near Lestrem on 6th June 1915. The South Warwickshire Roll of Honour states that his comrades saw him disappear and recovered his body from deep mud on the bottom of the canal. The 1st Battalion war diary entry for that day is transcribed below.

06 Jun 1915: Officers of the 2nd Leicesters arrived at 6am and went round the trenches with a view to relieving us tomorrow. Gen Jacob came down in the morning.

Hot and fairly quiet day. C.O. visited trenches after dinner. Work was continued on improving the parapets and deepening the R.2. communication trench.

2/Lt T.G. Christie (4th A & S Hdrs) arrived.

Casualties: 2 sick and Cpl Stone accidentally drowned.
