Charles is listed as being killed in action on 27th August 1916. The 2nd/4th Battalion war diary entries for the period 26th to 28th August are transcribed below.

26 Aug 1916 - Laventie: Nothing to report.

27 Aug 1916 - Farquissart: Took over Left Sub Section of Farquissart Sector of Trenches from 2/4 Oxford and Bucks LI. Relief complete 7pm. 2/1 Bucks on our right. 37th Bn Australians on our Left.

Enemy retaliation to our evening bombardment. One shell dropped amongst BNB Bombers in Reserve Trench (Casualties OR 2 Killed, 6 Wounded).

28 Aug 1918 - Farquissart: In conjunction with Australians our Artillery and TM's heavily shelled Enemy's position (Casualties OR 1 Killed 2 Wounded).
