Circumstances of Death

William is listed as being killed in action on 17th June 1918 most likely by enemy shell fire (see below). The 8th Battalion war diary entries for the period 16th to 18th June 1918 are transcribed below.

Brigade Support - 16 Jun 1918: Battalion in Brigade Support. Day fine, Capt. P.G. Harriss left Batt for course of Instruction, enemy artillery very active, and areas round Canal Bank, Hinges & Support Lines heavily shelled about dawn. "A" & "C" Coys moved up into Suffolk Line at night. Lt. Johnstone, U.S.M.C. took over from Lt. Sadler, U.S.M.C. (M). Lt. A.H. Brumwell, M.C. returned from course of Instruction. 2/Lt. J. Eastwood proceeds on Lewis Gun course. 2/Lt. A.G. Leete proceeds on Army Musketry course.

Brigade Support - 17 Jun 1918: Battalion in Brigade Support. Day fine, enemy shelled Hinges & Gordon Line heavily at intervals during night and early morning. No movement by day, working on trenches at night. Capt. V. Brierley, M.C. evacuated from Field Ambulance. Capt. Allison returned to Battalion from course.

Brigade Support - 18 Jun 1918: Battalion in Brigade Support. Day fine, enemy artillery still active on Gordon Line & area round Hinges. Lt. J.N.P. Holt proceeds on course. 2/Lt. A. Rushton proceeds on course, 2/Lt. S.B. Lowe returned from course.
