Frederick is listed as being killed in action on 16th September 1916. The 1st Battalion war diary entries for the 15th and 16th September 1916 are transcribed below. Happy Valley - 15.9.1916: The Division attacked Les Boeufs, zero 6.20am. Owing to attack being held up 6pm the Battalion was ordered up to support Colonel J Campbell 3rd Battalion Coldstream Guards. Lt Col R.J. Tempest lead the Battalion between Ginchy and Delville Wood in a NE Direction. The Commanding Officer ad Adjutant were hit almost immediately and Capt. J E Thorpe and Lt B A J Chapman were killed during a counter attack on our right flank Coy. Capt. R E F Maitland and 2/Lts Dawkins, Murdoch and Wodehead were wounded. 2/Lt Dawkins and Murdoch died of their wounds 4 days later. Lt. W.A. Boyd was then left in Command of the Battalion. Major Hon R. Coke came up to take command. Lt E T M McDougal to do Adjutant and Lt. D. J. Bethell to Command R.F. Coy. Major Hon R Coke was wounded on the way up. Les Boeufs - 16.9.1916: The day was fairly quiet and the Battalion remained attached to the 1st Guards of Brigade, 1st Grenadier Guards and 1st Bn Welsh Guards were ordered to attack Les Boeufs but the attack was held up and the position W of Gerd Trench was consolidated. The Battalion was relieved that night and the 59th Brigade relieved the 3rd Guards Brigade. The Battalion bivouaced at Carnoy. |
