Circumstances of Death

Albert is listed as dying of wounds on 24th August 1916 at the 44th Casualty Clearing Station, Puchevillers, The Warwickshire Roll of Honour book states that Albert was severely wounded and died following an operation to amputate both of his legs. War diary indicates he was most likely wounded on 22 Aug 1916 in the trenches at Bouzemcourt and died at the 44th Casualty Clearing Station.

We cannot be certain when Albert was wounded and so the 1st/8th Battalion war diary entries for the period 19th to 24th are transcribed below

Ovillers Post – 19.8.16: Battalion moved back to Ovillers Post. Casualties 5 killed 2 wounded.

Ovillers Post – 20.8.16: Battalion attached to 144 Bde, A & C Coys held Ratio Trench, B & D Coys in Ovillers Dugouts and Keep the two later Coys (B&D) provided carrying parties & D Coy in addition provided a working party  from 1am to about 9am on 21st.

Casualties 1 Killed 9 wounded. Reinforcements 16 OR.

Ovillers Post – 21.8.16: D Coy provided digging party. Both Ratio and Skyline Trench were shelled consistently during the night, also found 79? where a shell ignited some paraffin tins and exploded some rockets. Casualties 13 wounded. Reinforcements 16 OR.

Bouzencourt - 22.8.1916: The Battalion was relieved by the 5th R War R at about 6pm & moved back to bivouacks near Bouzencourt. 6 wounded.

Bouzencourt - 23.8.1916:Battalion spent the day bathing and generally cleaning up, no training done.
