We have not been able to trace the Gazette for the award of Edward's Military Medal

Circumstances of Death

Edward is listed as being killed in action on 26 Aug 1918. The Battalion war diary entries for the 25th & 26th Aug are transcribed below as they describe an ongoing operation.

25/8/1918: Attacked Courcelette with Lincolns on right and Sherwoods in support. C Coy on right A Coy on left. B Coy in support and D Coy in reserve. Attack passed through Courcelette and in towards Martinpuitch - held up on ridge west of Martinpuitch. No troops on left and Lancashire Fusiliers on right. Lincolns moved up on to left and attack went forward again to Ridge E of Martinpuich which was held. Very heavy rain storm made these operations difficult and all Coy Commanders did good work in getting their Coys into positions. Lieut Laing did particularly good work in reconnoitering positions, for B & D Coys. During the fighting on Ridge E of Martinpuich where the enemy put up a stiff resistance and attempted a counter attack.

2/Lts Scott & Barnes were wounded by M.G. Fire.

26/8/18: After two attempts B & D Company advanced our line 300 yards E of L’Abbaye taking up a position with flank position on both flanks on account being ahead of flank troops. During the fighting today Capt Morrison (D Coy) was wounded. A & C Coys missing their ? attacked at the same time on the right of the village of Eau L’Abbaye and advanced 1200 yards. ? flank with the Lincs, they then withdrew to the support of B & D Coys and took part in the third attack in which our line was advanced another 200yrds E of Eaucourt.
