Circumstances of Death

Reginald is listed as being killed in action on 7th August 1917. The 10th Battalion war diary does not record any casualties on that day but there were casualties on the previous and subsequent days. The war diary entries for the period 5th to 9th August are transcribed below.

Oosttaverne Wood – 05 Aug 1917: At night the Battn relieved 8/N Staffs R in the left subsector of the Northern sector Divisional Front.

Disposition: Front Line Right D Coy; left B Coy
                   Support: Right A Coy; Left C Coy
                   Battn HQ Denys Wood O.9.d.5.5

Relief completed 1.15am 6th

Casualties: 1 wounded

Denys Wood & Trenches – 06 Aug 1917: Our artillery was very active. Enemy shelled front support line & wood intermittently.

Enemy snipers and machine guns active.

Casualties – 1 killed and 3 wounded

Denys Wood & Trenches – 07 Aug 1917: At night the Battalion was relieved by 6/Bedford R. Relief complete by 12.15am 8th. On relief Coys marched to Vierstraat & thence proceeded in lorries to camp at Mont Vidaigne (M.20.d.5.3 – previously occupied by the Battn.

Draft: 4 Officers (2/Lts Seager, Moyes, O’Callaghan & Crew) & 12 OR (10 rejoining) joined.

Inkerman Camp – 08 Aug 1917: Battalion rested and cleaned up.

Casualties: to 12 noon 6 killed and 4 wounded

Inkerman Camp – 09 Aug 1917: Battalion rested and cleaned up. Part of 1st line transport started on march to Lumbres area.

Leave: 2 OR proceeded on leave.
