Circumstances of Death

Reginald is listed as being killed in action on Tuesday 26th September 1916, the 12th Battalion war diary is a little confusing and does not describe the actual attack.

But it does state that the casualties suffered by the Battn were heavy – 10 Officers were killed and 6 wounded. Of the 20 engaged, 1 Killed on other than duty was wounded & the Chaplain also. Of the ranks and files 60 were reported killed, 233 wounded and 121 missing.
The officers killed were as follows:

Majors M.C. Scarbrough and E. Whinney, Lieuts. C.E.M. Donnell and A.E. Rogers,
Lieuts. K. Retail, A.H. Card, A. Hughes, W.S. Scruby, A. Brenfetool and A.J. Wilkinson.

Officers wounded: Capts. Wm Castle, W. Parsons, J. Hendricks, Lieut. R.D. Walker, 2/Lieuts. E.T. Causton, L.H.B. Ogden, and E.P. Price, Rev. C.H. Nees (C.F. attached).

Large procedure undertaken to Aveluy Wood, where the Battn reformed. Later in the afternoon orders were received to proceed to Martinsart Wood – a distance of about two miles. On reaching Martinsart Wood at about 6.30 pm, Battn was put into bivouac. Weather very wet and cold.
