Circumstances Leading to Death (Normally from War Diary)
On the day he was killed Frederick's battalion was in the lines near Loos when they were ordered to attack and sieze Hill 70. They formed up in the NW corner of Loos and following an allied explosive and gas artillery bombardment they advanced towards Hill 70 to their SE. The bombardment was not particularly successful and they found themselves under constant fire and were eventually forced to stop and then crawl back to the Hulloch road where they dug in and consolidated.- An article by The Guards Magazine about the capture of Loos and attempts to capture Hill 70 can be read here.
- Hill 70 was known as such because of the oval contour stating 70 on the maps of the time. It can be seen on the map below
