Distinguished Conduct Medal Citation
London Gazette 27 Jul 1916 ‘For conspicuous ability, when his Company had attacked and captured an enemy trench, he organised the defence of a flank with great coolness and skill. When a withdrawal was ordered he again displayed great ability, directing the various parties by the bearings of certain stars.’
Circumstances Leading to Death - War Dairy
Sept 12th [1916] - Battn remains in front line trenches [near Hebuterne]. Lt Col RE Barnett Barker assumed temporary command of the 99th Inf Bde in the absence of Brig Gen R O Kellett and Major C C Harman assumed command of the Battn. Rev E.P. St John went to England on Special Leave. 2nd Lt W.E. Murray promoted Lt from Feb 1st, 2nd Lt G.S. Warren to be Lt from June 22nd. 2nd Lt P.W. Fisher killed by machine gun when on patrol. END
Further information from the King Edward VI website reveals that Percy was leading a patrol of twelve men and a fellow officer in no man’s land when Germans opened fire on them with a machine gun. Percy was shot through the heart and died instantly.
