Circumstances Leading to Death (Normally from War Diary)

On the day that Phillip was killed (27 Aug 1918) his battalion were ordered to attack a 1,500 yard wide front near Croisilles including Banks Trench. They formed up in a wide area near St. Leger and St. Leger Wood and at 7.00am began the attack but met stiff resistence from well defended positions and very heay machine gun fire. However 12 hours later at 7pm a further allied artillery barrage on Banks Trench forced the enemy out and allowed the battalion to Battalion supported by the Irish Guards to capture it and their objective. However the success came at a heavy cost of 344 casualties.
