Circumstances Leading to Death (Normally from War Diary)           

John was killed in action on 27 Oct 1914 when the battalion were in the front lines near Houplines. The war diary for the day states:
 
"Enemy shelled C&D Coys trenches and sniped continously and opened with Maxims (Machine Guns) on them. Our guns shelled enemy's trenches and houses in vicinity. 6 killed (including John) 15 wounded, all caused by enfilade fire".
