Circumstances Leading to Death (Normally from War Diary)           

The battalion and the wider 100 Brigade were tasked with capturing the village of Fontaine-les-Croisilles and three other objectives. 1) a crossing over the Sensee River; 2) a position at the Junction of Sensee River and Sunken Road (yellow line) and 3) a boundary line between map points (red line). It is not clear if all the objectives but at the end of the day the battalion has consolidated a line about 300 yards from the original jumping off point. William was one of 168 men listed as missing during the attack along with 22 killed and 101 wounded.
