Circumstances Leading to Death (Normally from War Diary)
On the day Leonard is reported to have died of his wounds the battalion were in the lines at Villers Faucon and tjhere were two incidents that day where casualties were incurred.- At 3.20am a patrol from D company was sent out towards enemy lines but due to light getting stronger they were spotted and 1 man was killed and another wounded as they made their escape back to the trenches.
- At 7pm patrols were sent out to discover enemies positions in the village of Villers Faucon and C company were hit by a shell burst which caused 5 casualies and a member of C company was accidentally killed.
However we cannot confirm that Leonard was wounded on the 4th as he is not specifically named in the war diary and could have been wounded on a previous day.
